I've always heard that dachshunds should avoid using staircases whenever possible.

I can easily see why going down steps is rough on a dachshund. But is going up them harmful as well? My untrained eye sees a lot more difficulty going down than going up.

I ask because lately our walks involve going up some stairs, but not down.

Thanks.

Puppies should be carried up and down the stairs until their muscles develop and strengthen.

I always carry Baxter down any stairs as going down steps compresses their spines and you don't want to have that as a repeated motion.
I let him go up stairs, but even occasionally carry him up sometimes too.

I also give him a disc and spine supplement twice a day.

Of course when they were puppies I carried them, and even today I try and prevent them going down stairs as much as possible.

I'm asking about up.

Tom, if you doxie is full grown and has good muscle tone, I don't see why going up a few stairs would hurt him and can help strengthen his back muscles, but it can depend on the height of the steps too.

If they are a high step, I would carry him up, but that is me.

Maybe others have another opinion.

I live in a townhouse and my dog who is 2 does go up and down the stairs. My vet said it is good excersice but to watch that he does not do it too fast so that he does not fall.
He also mentioned that depending on the dog he might have to stop that after he is 8 yrs old since when they are older the van get hurt and will not heal as easily or quickly. I also give my puppy supplements. I hope this helps.,

If you are in doubt you should ask ur vet for his/her opinion.

We have 10 doxies. The past two homes we have lived in did not have any steps for them. We are currently looking into a new home with a lot of land. We found a home with 8 acres, but the doxies will not have a straight walk out to their yard. So, we are going to build a deck with a ramp and steps. Half of the step will be ramp, and half will be steps. My husband and I were a bit concerned and worried at first, but we talked with our vet about this, and she feels that they will be fine due to the ramp. We have not closed on the house yet, so it is not official. Our doxies are our children, so we want what is best for them. If we could have found a home with a straight walk out for them, we would have loved it. But, most homes with lots of acres have steps out to their yard.
Your doxie is adorable!!!!!

Our Wishbone is just 9 months old and we never let him climb stairs because he really got big tummy. He's just taking his supplements now and losing some weights, he's really love running and chasing around.
