The tail will start first. By the time a pup is about 6 months you will see the beginnings of the wonderful flag tale that is an earmark of the long coated dachshund. My Kurt is 2 1/2 years old and Kate is a couple of months younger. They are almost in their full coats and have been for a while. Kate had a litter last January and her coat lost almost all its brindle markings. She was pure red. Now her black brindling is back and her cream chest and toe blazes are more pronounced than ever. I expect she will be an absolutely dashing lady in another year. (She is the granddaughter of a dog that won best in show at the Japanese Nationals, so she is expected to be beautiful
