How old is a long haired dachshund get before their entire coat grows in?
weenie_David Westerhaus/davewesterhaus@hotmail.com
Hi..

I have a black/tan longhaired dachshund who is about 8 months old now.. His longer hair is kind of growing in like a lion's mane across the upper part of his shoulders, and I am wondering how old dachshunds usually are when their long hair covers their entire body.

Any responses are appreciated. Thanks.

The tail will start first. By the time a pup is about 6 months you will see the beginnings of the wonderful flag tale that is an earmark of the long coated dachshund. My Kurt is 2 1/2 years old and Kate is a couple of months younger. They are almost in their full coats and have been for a while. Kate had a litter last January and her coat lost almost all its brindle markings. She was pure red. Now her black brindling is back and her cream chest and toe blazes are more pronounced than ever. I expect she will be an absolutely dashing lady in another year. (She is the granddaughter of a dog that won best in show at the Japanese Nationals, so she is expected to be beautiful ) If you want to see more pictures of any of my long coated, look at the website.

I can't wait for Simon, my blk/tan dappled longhaired to get his adult coat. He has such a thick puppy coat and hoping his adult coat is much silkier. Even tho I brush him regularly, that puppy coat is so flyaway, almost like a human baby's hair. LOL! Here is a pic of him I took last week, he is 10 months old:
