Harness or Collar?

I just read something that got me thinking. I need some opinions . Is it better for Oscar, who has a slipped disk, to wear a collar or a harness? I’ve never heard that they have different effects on Dachshunds. If you guys can help, I will appreciate it!

Perhaps this question is best answered by a vet. My two wear harnesses with velcro closures. They are very easy to put on and take off. They tended to pull too hard and choke on their collar. I would rather have more control over them without hurting them. Guess I was negligent in training the to always walk properly on a leash. Of course, when outside my fenced area they are on a leash. They settle down in about 5 minutes and walk pretty good. You can see the harnesses if you look at my gallery. Good luck!

Mine wear both. Each of them has a chain collar with their ID tags, Rabies tags and some lovely charms recently added to them thanks to Christmas Gifts from Annabel & Brownie. These are only for ID purposes in case they chew thru their harnesses. Kurt is particularly adapt at harness chewing and will eat his way out in no time at all if we stop or ride in the car. Since I am mobility challenged, we do not take walks anymore. Most of their exercise is in the fenced back yard where they are allowed to go au natural.

Dachsies should wear harnesses only. Collars can cause neck disc problems, which, can be worse than hurting a disc in mid back. The neck discs control breathing.

Also, they cannot slip out of a harness, they can slip out of a collar.

My two wear both for the same reasons DoxiePets does. I have been told it is not good to walk on a collar with a leash if the have a tendency to pull during the walk. I would ask your vet their opinion.

Mom says it’s better for us to get a harness. She said she’s gonna get us one as soon as she finds out who sells ‘em.

Harness all the way….no collar. The collar tend to pull at the nack and back.

  7. Comment by Harry:

We wear collars, because harnesses are difficult to find over here, and rarely fit the rather specialised physique of a dachshund. Having said that….. we only wear collars when we are out for a walk, as I love to chew the collars off the others…. whilst they are wearing them (come on…. who wouldn’t?). The only one who won’t let me…. is her ladyship, Heather. Anyway, we’re all microchipped, in case we get lost without our collars on.

Our breeder said a harness was a great idea but to wait on using it until the dog had learned not to pull on her leash when walking. You have less ‘control’ over the dog on a harness then a collar. So for corrections with training a collar is better but once a well behaved doxie (like I am sure we all are here on the blog) a harness is preferred.

  9. Comment by Brandy & Amy:

With the harnesses mine wear, I have much more control than with a collar. In fact, I could lift them off the ground, if necessary. I would not want to do that with a collar. The harnesses cover their entire 1/3 to 1/2 of their body. The site for these harnesses is:
