Toothpaste question

I was just wondering if there is a safe way to make homemade toothpaste for dogs. I know people toothpaste is unsafe because of the flouride. I read somewhere that baking soda is okay. Any suggestions?

I’d really check with someone about this one. I think that baking soda might be a little strong. Might really hurt their gums, especially if used frequently.

I thought it might be a little harsh too. It is only a temporary thing. All the places here that sell dog care items are out of stock and Belle’s real toothpaste supply is getting low. The joy of island life. ;)

Wouldn’t it froth up in their mouths rather.I give Rhuari a chew specifically designed to clean his teeth each day at bedtime.

It is more like a paste and is beef flavoured. It gets the places the chew misses. I use a finger brush because she doesn’t like the toothbrush.

She never DID like a toothbrush! Children!!!!!

Baking Soda is too strong for animals. I Buy C.E.T. toothpaste for animals. It’s formulated to kill bacteria for bad breath. It’s enzymatic dentifrice. It has the right amount of hydrogen peroxide in it and there is no guessing the amounts. You can get chicken or beef flavored or the non-flavor. It’s hard to start brushing teeth of an adult or adopted juvenile pup. You have to start when they are pups.

Just goes to show you shouldn’t always believe what you read. I think I’ll just have to make Belle’s toothpaste last until the new stock arrives. Good thing it’s not the food that’s slow comming in.

Thanks for the great answer Suz. I don’t use toothpaste ’cause I always thought it was a waste of money. I’ll have to try the kind you are using. I just use a plain toothbrush and warm water. Zipper and Gracen are having to learn about the whole toothbrushing thing ’cause they never had it done before (you can tell.)
