Wire Hair Doxie Tempermant?
Tags:No tags
As you all know we have a long hair doxie girl that we absolutely LOVE . Now our family is interested in the wire haired doxie. I have heard some bad things about the wire hair and their disposition. Are they really so different from the smooth and longs? Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks a bunch,

I have a wire (Mason) and my parents have a wire (Oscar) and they both have the sweetest temperaments. They are both little comedians that love to play and get into everything. They are both incredibly affectionate towards people and other dogs, especially eachother. Oscar is a bit of a digger/escape artist, and Mason is a stubborn barker, but I think that is pretty standard dachshund behavior typical of any coat type. I have never read anything to suggest a nasty disposition in wire hairs, nor have I ever experienced any problem with any wire we have ever had; they are my favorite coat type and I absolutely adore them. I hope this helps.

Yes…. they are very different! They are ‘less dachsie’, more terrier….. but having said that, each one is an individual, with his/her own character. Murphy was a real gent, Heather is a bossy, nosy old lady, and Ridley….. he is a gentle, simple soul who lives for food, sleep and cuddles!
One thing though….. their coats require a lot of work, if you want them to look ’show quality’. The coat needs stripping (basically the long, wiry hair needs to be pulled out), as they don’t moult. I strip Ridley, but clip Heather (and clipped Murphy). Clipping makes them lose the wiriness, but is a lot easier. Stripping is a really time consuming business. Heather won’t stay still long enough for me to even start!
The next ones I have will be smooth minis, like Harry, as the coat requires minimal maintainence, and they also show the true ‘dachsie ‘ character more than the other coat types. Good luck with whatever type you choose.

Rusty is a wire and he is the sweetest most loving little boy. I have never had a dachsie before Rusty so I don’t know how he compares disposition wise to the other coat types. But I will say that Rusty is wonderful (totally unbaised opinion).

I’ve only known smooths really well and wires only as friends in the dog park. As a general rule, I haven’t noticed much of a difference to tell you the truth, but Harry has a lot of experience, so if he says it, I’m inclined to believe it. Also, it is widely held that the wire hair dachshund gets the “wire” from terrier blood, so it makes some sense that they may sometimes be more terrier like.

Rowdie is higher energy than Ruckus. She bounces, spins, and pounces. She is very smart and VERY friendly toward EVERYONE we meet. She’ll jump into their arms to give them kisses after knowing them for a whole second. Her coat is much more work as I do hand strip her. She’s 11 mos and I’ve had to strip it twice. I wouldn’t trade her for anything!
Hope this helps!

My Zuke is a wire and tends to lean toward the rough coated terriers’ stubborness and dominance in the wire hair/dachshund bloodline. Like the longhairs, they have water spaniels in their bloodlines and tend to be more loving and even tempered. Zuke likes to mip at running children while playing. He is more excitable then the other smooths I have. I just stay on top of things and realize ZUke has a little more energy and spunk. He may mellow with age.
