Decision on Skye

Next Wednesday is our twentieth anniversary….. so my husband and I decided we’re buying each other dog surgery.

The decision really wasn’t about the money…. (we are in good shape financially, and I just got a raise with some retro pay which will be about $600). I had also mentally prepared myself that he was going to be needing an operation because I thought he had injured himself.

I just wanted to make sure that if we do it that we have a good chance of a successful outcome (ie: a healthy, reasonably mobile dog…. I don’t care if he is gimpy, as long as he doesn’t hurt all the time…). I know that everyone has their own rules about animals, and while I applaud people who have the heart to care for handicapped animals, I personally believe that young dogs need a certain quality of life that includes running and playing.

I’ve done some research in the professional journals and we’ve got an 84 to 87% chance of a good outcome (particularly since he is less than 8 months old), so I booked the surgery this morning for Tuesday. I also called around and heard good things about the surgeon.

So we’re going to cross our fingers and do our best by him. We own his brother as well, so we are also hoping that Oreo is not affected. Hopefully they both will continue to work on “the big hole to China” that they they started to dig in my yard last week, once Skye gets back on his feet.

Owning a pet is not all roses. I appreciate the kind of thought that goes into the decision you made. Quality of life is where it’s at for me! Now the decision’s made and you can sit back for a moment or two before the next of life’s lessons hits.

Enjoy! Good luck to you and Sky and Oreo.
