Update on Skye

Six and a half days after surgery, Skye is doing really well.

He was so pitiful for the first two days that I wondered if the surgery was the best choice. He is still more tired than usual, but is comfortable, eating well and is able to walk slowly around the yard, with the funniest sort of tippy-toe gait. He is very playful too, so I am rolling him on his back and doing his “doggy physio” while we play.

The hardest part now will be instituting the on leash only policy outside (for seven weeks). We have a fenced level back yard and I normally just open the door while we’re home so they can go in and out as they please.

All this week so far I have carried him outside, put him down and watched him. Now that he feels more comfortable, we have to prevent him from bursts of running, so I am going to get a longer flexi-leash for those 5 AM “business meetings” outside.

The other funny thing is that I brought the crate back in the house because although they are in a five foot pen in my kitchen, I didn’t want Oreo jumping on him when I wasn’t there to supervise (Skye slept on our bed for the first three days and Oreo slept with the girls). However, now the crate has been deemed the prize sleeping area, so I have had to alternate who gets the crate and who gets the other dog bed.

Oreo is still chewing things up in protest for all the extra attention Skye is getting, so I have been taking him on long walks in the evening.

This is such wonderful news Skye! We all knew you could do it! You just be careful so as not to hurt yourself. I know it’s so hard not to play when you’re feeling like you’re all better, but you have lots of recuperating to do. I’m so glad your mommy & daddy were able to do this for you. Now all you have to do is have a long, healthy and happy life!

    Your pal,
    Roo
