Lawn Pesticides!
Hi - Baxter’s Mom here.
I just wanted to warn everyone to be on the lookout for lawn pesticides that people put on their lawns in the spring and also in the fall. I have seen some this week already.
I had a horrible experience this past spring with my two-year-old Doxie, Baxter. He loves to wander onto lawns as I walk him on his extendable leash, and as you know, Dachshunds love to smell everthing, so he sniffed up some pellets of pesticide on a lawn and got a really, really bad allergic reaction from it! He had nasty welts all over his body! His nose got all swollen because the pesticide was ingested into his system through his nose first. I rushed him to the vet and he got some Benedryl allergy pills, but then the reaction got worse and I had to rush him back to my vet and he had to get a shot of Benedryl! The reaction took two weeks to finally completely leave his body and I ended up bringing him to my vet four times! I was so woried about him. I know the lawn in my neighborhood that Baxter sniffed up the pesticide pellets from and all the lawn care people who put down the pesticide left was 1 very small yellow warning flag on the far corner of the lawn. I did not even see it! It said: WARNING! Pesiticide, Keep Children and Pets Off. Why do people put this poison on their lawns? The pesticide company even spilled the pesticide all over the sidewalk and into the street!
I went to the web site of the pesticide company and they claimed to be environmentally safe to children and pets - then why the warning on the lawn flag??? I even tried to call them, but I was only able to leave a voice message, and they never returned my call. I was trying to find out what the pesticide exactly was as my vet asked me to see if I could get that for him so he could warn other pet owners.
So, please be aware where your Doxie sniffs when outside and if you see any small white pellets on a lawn or sidewalk, or those tiny yellow warning flags - stay off!! Keep your doxie safe.

Thank you so much for the info!!!!! It is always a good idea to keep Benedryl and hydrogen peroxide on hand. Benedryl for allergic reactions and peroxide for induced vomiting in case of accidental ingestion. Please share all types of information such as this. There was a blog mentioned about using cocoa mulch which is toxic to pets.

I do sodding, grading, and seeding for a living and do my own fertilizer and weed control. We keep Sunny & Lucy off the grass for a couple days after I do it unless I water it in good then that takes care of it. I only use the safe stuff though but your right there is some real nasty stuff out there. The stuff I use is actually safer than what most commercial companies use but it is more expensive also.

The stuff we use over here isn’t harmful to pets, on occassion it isn’t even harmful to the weeds HA HA HA.
My only piece of lawn is out the front and the dogs don’t get to go on it anyway.

I only use stuff for the lawn when I know that the Gang won’t be here for at least a week…. The last time was a few years ago! Needless to say, the lawn looks bad, but that doesn’t matter, what with the bald patches and Hughie’s holes……

I had a experience with some lawn people and Beaner, he got real sick after they were here, he was pooping blood as well as throwing up blood, so I called them and told them I would have to cancell them because I would not put my boyz in danger and they said well thats gonna cost you, I said fine, I will pay it, but never put stuff on my lawn again, its not worth it, I will live with the bugs.
