Surgery concerns
Our almost 2 year old Long Haired Dachshund Sophie is getting fixed tomorrow. Our vet is has gone over what is to be expected as far as recovery time. But what I’m unsure of is how will she be upon my picking her up later that day. How will she be later that evening? I know this surgery is done everyday and is safe. I’m scared and unsure what to REALLY expect. If you have gone through this with your precious girl could you please let me know what to expect and/or watch for. I work everday and take the “kids” to work with me. I have a nice comfy kennel for Sophie to ride in and relax in for her recovery. Is there more I need to do? Am I worrying too much? She’s my sweet little girl and I don’t know what I’d do if I did something wrong after her surgery. Any help/suggestions are greatly appreciated.

I believe the comfort of a cozy kennel and your company is enough to keep your little one content. I would not offer any food the first night and only tiny sips of water. You will be amazed the next day how your wee one will be up and around. Perhaps ask you vet to include some take home pain meds such as Rimadyl for a few days for added comfort.

The vet is sending meds home with us. I couldn’t imagine going through surgery and not having pain meds. Thank you for your response.

I just went through it. She did wonderfully!
When you pick her up, she will be groggy and in pain, but very happy to see you.
Doc said OK for water and food. She was hungry too, but I only let her have a few morsels every 15-30 minutes. Water through the dropper for her meds every hour. I woke up all through the night and woke her up to drink some (careful about dehydrating).
Morning she was much better, by day 2 - lookout - had to hold her down! Wanting to run and jump like nothing ever happened.
I was soooo worried too. She will be fine.

All the girls in this house have been through this surgery and all have been fine. Lots od love will make her feel lots better. Like Spanky said, my girls were up and around the next day like nothing happened. Good luck and let us know how she is doing.

Both Amy and Brandy were spayed when they were ~ 6 months old. I picked them up the same day as the surgery, late afternoon. When Brandy was operated on, I just had her, not Amy. She was groggy when I picked her up and for the rest of the evening. I was told that she could drink small amounts of water and a little dinner around 8 pm that evening. When Amy was operated on, Brandy was around about a year old. I had to keep the two dogs separated for a few days to prevent Amy from being too feisty and hurting herself. I actually had her spayed on a Thursday and stayed home with her Friday and through the weekend. I would lay on a chaise with her lying on my chest. She was just fine. I posted a picture of her just now that was taken 3 days after her surgery. I am sure that everything will be fine!

Just love her. Tell her how pretty and brave she has been. She will probably be a little loopy all evening and maybe tired the next day but in no time, she will be her bouncy, trouncy ole self! Thank goodness for the resilency of dachies. Love will see you BOTH thru it!

Hi Lisa:
Our sweet little girl Kassie was spayed earlier this year! I was a nervous wreck just like you! All my worrying was for nothing! She did great and came home the next day and it was like nothing had happened.
Just give your little Sophie lots of love and attention and she will be just fine! You are worried because you love her so much, but you will be relieved to see her back to her self very quickly!
She will be fine, but just to be sure we will have our fingers and paws crossed for a safe procedure and easy recovery! Keep us posted!

Zoe was 6 months when I spayed her. The meds will come in handy. It took her 2 days and then she was back to her old mischievious self. I just comforted her and talked to her softly. She would wimper once in a while and that is when I gave her some pain meds. I only had to use that 2 times. Next day no more pain but she just felt like laying around all day which I let her.At that time I had my 55 pound springer in the house but he did not bother her so I did not have to keep seperated. She will be fine. It is natural to be a little nervous. It is still an operation but don’t worry to much. This is my 3rd dog having either spaying or neutering. I can tell you neutering is easier for the male. The stitches were no concern for me she left them alone till the very end and then 2 days before we had to go to the vet to take them out she decided to do it herself he he. I guess she was practicing to be a vet LOL. She did a very good job. Will be thinking of Sophie today and hope she has a speedy recovery.
