Yikes! I was told by a neighbor that my small cat sunning herself was taken by a hawk. I was hoping he was wrong. Every one should be warned!

I just saw the story on the news last night. Poor little thing had stitches on his head but other than that, looked okay. The boy said he stepped on the hawk's tail then kicked it away. What a scary thing to happen. We have hawks here too and the neighbor gets his gun out when he sees them because he raises exotic birds. I never thought that they would go after a dog though. When I lived in Alberta, the coyotes would take cats and lure dogs away so they could kill them. Didn't happen to me, but my neighbors lost their Sheltie that way.

I have a friend whos standard doxie, Ruger was carried off by an eagle but he struggled loose and fell about 75 feet to the ground. Other than the gashes from the talons which required stitches Ruger was fine even after the fall.

We hate hawks! We weren't there, but my mom says that when she was seven, a new kitty that she had for about 6 months was carried away by a hawk in the evening. She had gotten out of the house, even though she wasnt supposed to. This is a very real danger! No woot woots for hawks!

I watch the dachsies when they are tiny because there are magpies galore round here,i don't know whether they could carry one off but they may attack and cause injury. We have sparrow hawks which fly off with smaller birds but not seen them attack anything bigger.

It's still wet and windy here too.

Gulp! That was a bit too close for comfort! All my friends across the pond... please take care. Over here we don't have HUGE birds like that.... just the odd pigeon, crow or seagull. If fact..... we don't really have nasty, vicious animals (not counting my sister Heather....,she may not have many teeth... but can still inflict a nasty nip) at all, so maybe its better if all you tiny dachsies came over here!!!

Harry

PS Its still raining.......... and windy........

What a brave little boy to protect his puppy. We have hawks here too, and once one actually landed in the yard next door. Both of mine are too heavy, but it's still a scary thought. And I've seen coyotes right here in the city too.

There are plenty of hawks out here, too!

On the one hand I have made jokes about the possiblity of something like that happening but deep down believed that something like that is totally possible...and now here it is in the news.

Thank goodness this story has a happy ending!

Thanks for the link...what a cute puppy!

I forgot to mention that I too have seen hawks in my neighborhood (we have really tall pine trees they nest in) and I have also seen them circling above. I always keep Baxter on a leash, and I think he is a bit over their weight limit, but I will be more careful that they don't swoop down and latch onto him with those large talons! I should also mention that I live only 10 miles south of Boston, and people have seen coyotes in my neighborhood too!

A few times when i have walked olivia out by our lake i have noticed hawks circling above....its funny you posted this story, because i always thought i was crazy for thinking that they were after olivia, but i swear they would follow her around the lake--it made me uncomfortable so i took her inside, but i thought it was just my paranoia.

Now that I think of it, sometimes Brandy will sort of look up, then act scared of something above her. I see nothing. I wonder if she was once attacked by an angry nesting mockingbird? They can be very aggressive.

I am so happy the little feezer got away with only a few injuries. This happened to me when I lived on the farm with my beagle puppy Pokey. It was a horrible thing to witness but I am happy to report that Pokey got away after she high tailed it to the pond. I had to rescue her with a large fish net as she could not find her footing on the bank of the pond and it was winter time.

http://www.milforddailynews.com/homepage/8999365366551967471 Here is a link to the story! It isn't just rural residents that need to be worried about hawks. We have lots of hawks here in New York both in the outer boroughs and Manhattan. A red-tail here in the park swooped down and tried to grab our chihuahua pal Layla last week!
