I don't think I would want to own one. Our neighbor has a wolf cross who hates my Staffordshire terrier. She is never tied up and has attacked her a couple times. My dog is 16 and she doesn't want to go outside if she sees the other dog on the road. The owners are aware of the problem because one time it happened when I was taking Squeak and Shadow for a walk. Imagine if the dog had gotten hold of one of the little ones? We have coyotes here, but don't usually see them. When I lived in Alberta, we would see them all the time, day and night. We also have bears here and some people have spotted a cougar and bears near a residential part of town that backs onto crown land. We were riding the horses one day when we came across a deer head and some other parts. We didn't stick around to see if it was just from a hunter dumping stuff there or the cougar. The horses didn't want to keep going either. Luckily we didn't take the dog with us that day. (Didn't have Doxies then) There have been a few dog/coyote crosses at the local shelter. I am glad that we don't have such big predators over here. We do have the occasional fox....but they tend to be shy and run away. The loss of the Yorkie is a terrible thing. I happen to have seen a few coyotes in my own yard, this was last year sometime. For some unknown reason I had put Louie in the house (he's unleashed outside) and was out with Leo, he is leashed. I never put either dog in the house before we're all ready to go inside, but this day I did for some reason. I walked around the corner of my house, with Leo on his leash, and there stood a coyote just starring at us. I picked Leo up very slowly and walked to my front door. Had Louie been outside there's no telling what would happen. I also had another incident when I did have Louie outside, without his leash, it was dark outside. I followed him into the front yard because he went running and barking. Louie stopped dead in his tracks, stopped barking, and turned and ran toward the front door. This leads me to believe our domesticated doggies know the difference between prey and possibly becoming prey. I watch my boys very carefully because the entire back side of my house borders the MN Zoo. I tell everyone watch your dachsies, it only takes a second for something awful like this to happen. This should be a warning to everyone. That is horrible, I can’t even begin to imagine what that owner is going through. It is our job to defend them, and we need to make sure we keep up our end of the bargain! My pups never wander without a leash, but this just cements in my head why they should never be without a leash! We have a lot of foxes near where we are in Manchester, England as I live in quite a rural area. You are right to say keep your pets on a lead. You never know what can happen.
