Hi,
I am not sure,I had to fly my gal in this is the 2ed time I have done it with no problems.
I would start with all the questions, ask for ref. and do your homework.
Its a big process I tell you I went through 4 breeders before I felt I had the right one!
And I tell you as soon as I got home with my little Gem I walked in the house and phone was ringing it was the breeder asking how his baby did!
She was the perfect puppy and him the perfect breeder I might of got lucky I dont know but I do know do your homework!

I'd be wary too about buying from a breeder I hadn't met and seen the premises and the parents of the pup.

I agree with all that has been said above, if you can't go personally ask a relative or a blogger to go on your behalf, the transporting isn't so much the problem but buying the pup unseen in the flesh.

I have read so many heart wrenching stories on here of sick deformed pups that I personally would not take the risk.

If you have been following the Keystone saga you will know that what is seen on her web site is not what goes on behind the scenes.

Good Luck with your decision, but please ask a blogger to help out if they can, I cetainly would if I lived your side of the Pond.

My Tootsie was flown Continental Airlines also. They do have very strict rules for flying animals on their flights. No colapsible crates, no shots so many days before flight, Not flown above or below certain temperatures. She was fine when she arrived, however she was flown in the month of May. I got Holly from the same breeder and drove to get her because her time of shipment was in January and I knew the strict temperature rules they followed at the airline and the fact that it is never a direct flight from where she came. There would be a layover in another state before coming to mine even though it is closer to fly direct from spot to spot. Rediculous the way some airlines operate! You may want to check out the flight plan going from their place to yours. Just food for thought!!! Good Luck! Carm

I have a friend that ships parrots all the time and has never had a problem. I would however agree with the other replies. I would purchase a ticket and visit the breeder. Who is the breeder? Perhaps there is someone on THDB that might be close to your breeder and check them out for you. I would be too afraid of buying a puppy from someone I didn't visit and meet personally. Good luck.

Shipping in and of itself is overall a very okay thing to do. There are exceptions to every rule though. Weather is one issue, layover times must be considered when choosing a flight, etc. The most important thing, in my opinion, is the health of the puppy at the time of shipping. This is where the other question, the breeder, comes into play. Obviously if you buy from a bad breeder and the puppy is not well, then the shipping experience could be detrimental to the animal and not to mention a terrible experience for you, as the buyer. The issue with the breeder is separate but very important to think about before purchasing anything online. Maybe you could get some references and/or let some of us know who the breeder is. Perhaps someone here knows of this breeder and can offer feedback to you.

Thank you very much for your feedback. I really appreciate it. I totally agree with you about the puppy mills. I get on my soap box about puppy mills quite often. My husband and I actually rescued our first dachshund and then bought from breeders for the next two. I would love to rescue again but I feel it is best for my other dachshunds to get a puppy...and it is so much harder to rescue a puppy. We got very lucky with Pearl, she was only about three months old. It is very hard to trust people in this day and age...which is very sad. However, I have been in contact with him for a few months both on the phone and computer. But, that still doesn't mean that he is a good or safe breeder. My husband and I have had many discussions over this. We are trying very hard to make the best decision. Thank you very much for your advice...I really appreciate it.

Excellent point Lee Anne. If you can't visit the breeder personally can you send someone who lives nearby? Maybe a cousin or a friend?

If you don't have someone to send, then at the very least check with the Better Business Bureau or the state agency that over-sees animals. Thankfully in this day and age of the internet finding this source should be easy!

Good Luck!

This is my personal opionion - so please take it for what it's worth. Unless you know this breeder personally, or you have personal glowing references for this breeder, you should buy a pup from a breeder where you can visit the facility. You need to make sure you are not buying a puppy from a mill.

If this puppy is the puppy for you... then I would fly out and get it myself. This is how some of my friends have done it. That way you CAN meet the breeder and see the facilities AND bring your new baby home yourself as carryon and you can ensure it's safety.

That's what I would do.

All the best,
Lee Anne
