News on Dog Food Recall

From the CNN website this morning: http://www.cnn.com/2007/US/03/30/pet.food.recall.ap/index.html

A chemical used to make plastics & fertilizer was found in the Menu foods. PETA is calling for a recall of dry dog food also, claiming some pets have become sick after eating the kibble (as has been reported by some HDB Members). FDA has no plans to issue recall and veterinarians are saying they are not seeing a trend.

Wow, this is getting scarier by the minute…..

  1. Comment by Pepper&Bella:

I use Flint River Ranch…and I called, they don’t buy any products from other companies. So far we are spared. Bella was sick after eating Nutro so we kicked Nutro to the curb to be on the safe side. When will it end??????

  2. Comment by daemondox:

That’s scary. I feed Nutro to my two big dogs and to my cats, but none of them are acting any differently. The products I feed them don’t contain wheat gluten or any other form of wheat though. Some of the other Nutro products do.

So what happened with the rat poison now? Was that just a false claim?

  3. Comment by Tuulikkisstepmom:

The lab in NY sticks with its testing finding rat poison:

“New York remained confident in its aminopterin finding, said Patrick Hooker, commissioner of the New York state Department of Agriculture and Markets. Hooker added that neither aminopterin nor melamine should be in pet food, but that it was unclear why the latter substance would be poisonous to the cats in which it was found.”

‘”While we have no doubt that melamine is present in the recalled pet food, there is not enough known data on the mammalian toxicity levels of melamine to conclude it could cause illness and deaths in cats. With little existing data, many questions still remain as to the connection between the illnesses and what has caused them,” Hooker said.’ (These quotes from the AP article)

Looks like there were TWO contaminants in the food — just downright scary. Hate to be paranoid, but if these contaminants are in cat and dog food that has ingredients dumped in them from contract food sources from outside the U.S., what’s to prevent the same kind of contamination in people food? Gotta be some companies that buy ingredients from outside the country. Humpf! Like the old saying goes, just because you’re paranoid doesn’t mean they aren’t out to get you. Comforting, isn’t it?

  4. Comment by Kip:

PETA likes to fly off the handle about things. I mean, how can they be objective about pet food? How do you think they feel about the ducks, chickens, cows, fish and all the other animals that are killed to feed our pets?

It’s always good to err on the side of caution, but I wouldn’t take anything PETA says to heart. Stick with smaller/independent dog food manufacturers that you trust, and call them directly if you have questions. But don’t get all freaked out cause PETA is making a stink.

    Just my two cents.

  5. Comment by Ozark:

FWIW, Personally, I’m not freaked out

I don’t know why it was necessary to import wheat from China in the first place. Don’t they have enough wheat in KANSAS for God’s Sake?

  6. Comment by Sandi55:

I agree with Kip. First it’s the hooman food and now they are going after dog and cat food. PETA thinks that little bear cub should have been put to sleep rather than raised by humans until he could go off on his own. Maybe these guys needs to go to Kentucky and other states cuz of all those puppy mills and make themselves useful!
