Louie is sick, he’s being quarantined:(

Well wouldn’t you know just days before getting our new puppy Louie gets sick, and I mean sick. It started last night with a bit of diarrhea, then he wouldn’t eat dinner, or anything I offered him. This is one dachsie that never misses a meal and never turns his nose up to any type of human food, so I knew something was wrong. This morning he had more diarrhea, vomited, so off to the vet. While at the vet he was very lethargic, usually he’s muzzled. Everything appeared fine, stool fine, no temp, then the vet made him stand to listen to his tummy, and a pool of blood lay underneath him. So the vet ran some test to see if he had something called hemorrhagic gastritis, this was negative, but he does have clostridium, or another name is Cdiff. I deal with this same bacteria at work all the time, patients are in isolation. It’s contagious only if ingested, that’s why we wear gloves at work and don’t stick our fingers in our mouth. Well with dogs it’s contracted the same way, and we all know how much dogs like sniffing each others rear. The diarrhea that comes with cidff is uncontrollable, and it’s a bloody mucousy and most awful smelling stuff I’ve encountered. Louie has no control over when he will have this diarrhea therefore he is being kept in the bathroom. He prefers laying in the tub. He’s had two large bloody poops once we got home, oh I’d say roughly 250cc of blood poop all over the bathroom floor. He’s on an antibiotic for 10 days, but once the diarrhea stops he’s no longer contagious. My poor baby, he acts sick, doesn’t want to eat, but he is drinking thank goodness. He just lays there and looks up every now and then. My heart breaks for him he’s got enough wrong, he doesn’t need this too. So please keep Louie in your prayers, pray that this diarrhea ends soon, and he gets back to his old self again. Thanks everyone

Hi, How awful!! When he starts feeling better. Give him some canned plain pumpkin. And some plain yoguart. It will help with the diarrhea.
Good luck & take care. DoxieloverJoan

Cdif is No joke, never heard of a dog getting it before. The patients we have with it have been on antibiotics prior to picking up the bug from another patient, the antibiotics cause the normal bowel bugs to stop working and the nasty ones to take hold, even when no longer infectious the mucous can still be present.

I hope Louie settles down soon,if he is drinking at least he is replacing any fluid he is losing.

I tried getting pumpkin over here when Rhuari was ill a couple of weeks ago but none available. What I am going to do is buy a pumpkin later in the year and cook and freeze it in small amounts.

I hope the bug doesn’t get to the other boys.

These things are sent to try us.

This is why I was in shock when the vet told me he had cdiff because I also have many patients who have cdiff. So far he’s only had two large loose stools. He doesn’t have an appetite, but he is drinking:) I know he may have flare ups even after he’s feeling better, but keeping my fingers crossed that they are few and far between. Bobbi

Oh, Bobbi, we are so sorry to hear that Louis is having such a bad time. Thank goodness he has a loving and caring mom to help him feel and get better soon! Paws and fingers will be crossed that Louis will be back to his old self soon! Love, Baxter and Bette

  5. Comment by Ozark:

Poor Louie! Do you know how he might have contracted this disease? Best wishes for him, I know he’s in good hands with you Bobbi.

    Rhona,
If you’d be willing to pay for the shipping, I’m happy to send you several “tins” of canned pumpkin.

I hope he feels better. One of my doxies had this exact same thing about 5 months ago. She was on antibiotics for 10 days and two other types of meds. The vet also put her on this special type of canned cat food…which she actually ate. I used this to squirt the meds in and she ate it right up.

You are right, the smell is something you will never forget!!!

  7. Comment by Clara:

I’m so sorry he’s feeling so bad. We’ll say a special prayer for him and pray the others remain well.

Poor Louie. We will be praying. My mom had Cdif before she passed on.. Ugh doesn’t cover it!

  9. Comment by Bobbi Jo:

Louie finally ate a bowl of this special food the vet sent home, suppose to be high in fiber to stop the diarrhea. The vet was going to send me home with 4 cans, and Louie is soooooo picky when it comes to eating, I told her just give me one, he won’t eat it anyway. To my surprise he ate it and wanted more and then more, I guess I was wrong. I took him outside to get some sun, he just peed, and he even ran after a stick. He’s out of the bathtub, somehow managed to jump out, still trying to figure that one out, and he’s been laying by the gate wondering why he’s being confined:)) I hope he continues on this path, that would make my day:))))) Bobbi

Get Better, Louie! I feel for you, Bobbi, I had mini strokes when I seen that with Snitzel, my dachshund from 6 years ago. He kept getting whipworm, I think it was. Get rid of it and then it would come right back after a worming. I truly hope this is just a bump in the road for you both. No fun. Do they have a puppy pedialite? hmmm…or jello water? just make sure it isn’t cherry or raspberry and just a bit. May work. Good luck and let us know, please?

Louie, all of the DoxiePets have their paws crossed and are thinking about you in their pawyers. I am not sure, but I think that when I let them out for their “business meeting” this morning, I heard the refrain of Louie Louie coming from the meeting room!

  20. Comment by Jessica:

Oh Louie I hope you feel better soon! We will keep you in our thoughts our fingers and paws are crossed!

  21. Comment by cheryl:

    Oh Poor sweet Louie,
It is no fun when our furbabies get so sick and must be very hard to isolate him from the others. Auntie Cheryl, Zoe and Gracie all wish him well and to get better real soon. Emma was informed by her sisters who Louie is and she too sends her love and best wishes for a speedy recovery.I truly hope the rest of your clan does not come down with this and that your new baby can come home soon. Keeping our fingers and pawyers crossed.
    Love you Louie
