Picky eater solution

My dogs are very picky when it comes to eating their dog food. I have tried every trick in the book, including a little gravy, cheese, peanut butter, etc. to get them going and nothing has worked very well - until today. Last night we were having hot dogs for dinner and they were extremely interested. So I decided to put the leftover ones in the blender with some of the water they were cooked in and make a thick “gravy” for them. Well, I warmed it up this morning and put a few tablespoons into their food. They loved it! Nobody came up for air until the bowls were empty. I buy the low sodium, beef or turkey ones and I still wouldn’t recommend this everyday, but it sure did work.

Sounds good to me but of course i’m a doxie so any human food sounds good to me. Hehehe

Rhuari’s picky eating only stopped when he had some competion from Chase,he now finishes long before the girls and has to be fed in his crate to stop him eating everyones portions.

I do not know what kind of food you are feeding them, but given the choice of dog food and everything that you have tried, any dog would pick “the extras”. Keep feeding them the dog food, offering it to them for 1/2 hours each feeding time. If they don’t touch it or leave some of it, pick it up. Serve up the regular serving at the next meal. They will get hungry enough that they will eat there food, and KNOW that you are not going to provide them with anything else. Most important, do not let them “free feed”. They will get the hint.

You know, I’m finding some individuals on this blog rather rude. First, I do not let my dogs “free feed”. Their bowls go down for 15 - 20 minutes twice a day. Next, I only add a very small amount of anything to their food. Finally, they do not pick “the extras” and leave the kibble - which is a combination of three quality brands. They usually don’t care to eat much of anything - and yes, they are perfectly healthy. The reason I mentioned the hot dog “gravy” at all was that some people have been having difficultly lately getting their ill dogs to eat and I thought they might appreciate knowing how appealing my picky eaters found this.

We love the Weener Pate/gravy idea. what a grand idea. A few tablespoons of the mixture is just what an ailing/finicky doxie needs. Perhaps we misunderstood the intent of the recipe. I don’t believe anything was said out of malice.

    Keep the great ideas coming!!!!!
