NEWS-SUN STAFF REPORT
Robert A. Schultz, the father of an infant who was mutilated by a dachshund Sunday in Waukegan was arrested Thursday and charged with child endangerment and domestic battery.
Schultz, 25, of the 800 block of Eaton Lane, Lake Villa, appeared in Lake County bond court, where Associate Judge Theodore Potkonjak released him on a personal recognizance bond.
Schultz was charged with two counts of child endangerment and one of domestic battery. Each count is a Class A misdemeanor and carries, upon conviction, a sentence of up to one year in jail or probation.
Schultz had taken his 4-month-old son to his girlfriend’s apartment in the 1300 block of White Oak Drive, Waukegan. She owns the dachshund and is not the child’s mother. The boy was wrapped with blankets and left on a couch while Schultz and the woman slept for several hours in another room. The woman was not charged.
They awoke to the infant’s screams.
Police believe the dog may have smelled urine and began chewing the diaper. The boy was bleeding profusely and was taken by a Flight For Life Helicopter to Lutheran General Hospital in Park Ridge.
The boy reportedly is undergoing surgery today in Children’s Memorial Hospital in Chicago. He is listed in stable condition.
The dog is being held for 10 days of observation at the city animal shelter.

I hope the Dachshund can be rehomed where no babies or small children live.
how horrible for the little baby.

I’m sorry but what brain dead people would leave a 4-month old infant alone on a couch!
It was a tradegy both for the baby and the Dachshund.
I agree Spanky, but is seems both the baby and the doxie need to be rehomed.
Hopefully, if the mother is around she is more competent.

How sad for that child. The baby must have cried for quite some time for the dachshund to be able to get through the blanket and diaper.
Just out of couriosity, not a debate, or anything, just a survey, would we feel the same way about the dog being re-homed if it had been a doberman, german shepherd, jack russell etc…

I was shocked when I heard this story!!! Who would leave a 4 month old baby and any kind of dog alone and unsurpervised??!! The dog should have been secured, as the baby should have…period!! I am sure the baby had to scream or cry with the first bite to his skin, not after he had been mutilated. I will say a prayer for this poor 4 month old baby that he can be treated and enjoy a normal life, and for the dog, I hope they give it another chance!! The dog acted on instinct and the Dad acted with his other head!
God help them all, it is sad..so very very sad! I am going to hug my kids and furkids!

That is the most horrifying thing I’ve ever heard. I’m sorry but if any of my dogs (dachshund or otherwise) had the”instinct” to chew up a baby it would be PTS. Children come first.

ITA with everyone! That man (?) should lose all rights to his child and shame on him for letting that baby be alone on a couch! At 4 months, he could have rolled off the bed! “Sleeping” must have been more important than making sure the baby was fed and that the dachshund would be kenneled or something. This is outrageous! My prayers to that little guy, AND the little dog.

I am so glad the father is being charged but I also think the mother has some responsibility also,We as mothers naturally have a stronger instinct to protect our children..Where was she when her little baby needed her?
I suspect that this baby started crying the moment this little dog started playing with the diaper just from the jerky movements.
I feel very bad for the baby and also for that poor little doxie who in his little mind was just playing..I certainly hope they both get a good and save home.

The mother wasn’t there, dad had a weekend visit and took the baby to his girlfriends house. I have been on someother forums where family members of the mom have posted. My first question was why did they not hear that baby crying sooner?
