Housebreaking
Hi everybody. I don’t write much but I read every day. I love this place! My problem is simple - my babies just pee and poop everywhere. I have potty pads down and they do try to hit them somewhat. They love every throw rug we have. My living room carpet that has been replaced once already is terrible. Can anybody give some good suggestions for cleaning? I have bought every product available, ordered some off the net and nothing I have found gets rid of the urine smell. I use my steam cleaner weekly. I just don’t know what to do. I don’t crate them during the day when we are gone. I was thinking maybe I should, but all 5 have never been crated. I have one that throws a huge fit when she is at the vet for the day so I don’t know if crating her would be a good idea. We had most of our carpet removed and put down laminate and wood. I am worried that this is being ruined also. I just don’t know what to do anymore. Living in the pacific northwest, it rains all the time. They hate the rain and I have to force them outside. They will do their business, but then come inside and do some more. My youngest are 4 and the oldest is 15. Any suggestions I would appreciate. I want to be the bestest dachshund mommy I can be.
thanks,
Karen

Are they 4 years old and 15 years old? It may be too late but I think they definitely need to be crated. That is the only way you can control them and what they are doing. Sorry I don’t have anything more to help you but if they are enclosed somewhere the mess will at least be confined.

Do you have an area where you have hardwood or linolium where you can gate them off with a baby gate? Kitchen or laundry room? The smaller the area, the better the chances that they will not poop there.
I have 4 adult girls that have full run of the house but they do very, very well.
The others stay in the kitchen on linolium behind a baby gate when I am not home.
As far as crating goes, I currently have 10 dachshunds in my house including the two babies I am keeping from my last litter and the new little boy I just got, :0) and I don’t crate any of mine.

You can’t let them have the run of the house. Confine them when you are gone, maybe to the kitchen , and try to keep them in sight when you are with them. With 5 I know that will be hard and now they are probably marking to mask each others scents. I have enough with just 2 to watch. I admire those of you who can handle more!
