I am shocked.

So on Sunday, we did the 13 hour drive from Chicago to New York City with all three dogs and one kitty cat. Rather crowded in the SUV, I might add. All three dogs have been beautifully behaved on trips in the past, so we had no worries about the trip this time - although we knew it was a little longer than any of them have done in the car in the past.

Anyway, about a third of the way across Ohio, as I am driving in the left lane at 80 mph, a full on fight erupts between Lucy and Herman. Thankfully, my boyfriend was able to reach back there and separate them while I steered us over to the shoulder. It seemed that things were okay, but then we noticed a few drops of blood on my sweater. Lucy’s ear got split in two spots. We were able to stop the bleeding, and because our vet is a member of the family, we got an analysis of the situation from the road with the help of a camera phone. It is healing up nicely, but Herman also suffered a small cut below the eye.

We were so lucky, lucky that my boyfriend has really long arms, and that the ear split neatly, and that Lucy didn’t get a little higher and get Herman’s eye. But still. I am shocked. They have never fought before. There were no bones. No toys. No special spots to sit. I have no idea what incited them. But it has shaken me, to say the least. Nothing like steering a car to the shoulder through three lanes of traffic while the dogs snarl and snap at one another.

Thanks all for letting me vent. They are well looked after, and now curled up against one another on the couch, like nothing ever happened. Just like dogs. Leave me to stress about it while they take what looks like an excellent nap.

I am glad it all seems to be ok now. I am kinda strict on myself that I only kennel them each seperately…sometimes its the silly things that get them worked up, and I always worry!!!!

I think it is a full moon effect…ArrBee has been snarky lately. I hope they are better in the future and hooray for those with long arms and lots of guts to separate two feuding dogs! I sympathize with you!

when my gritter got older he got very territorial in the car and would only attack my little one at that time.

I don’t know if it was age or not….
