Ideas for special event / fund raising for Humane Shelter
Hi guys. Let me pick your brains for some fund raising ideas for our local Humane Society shelter. I volunteered (gulp!) to organize a fund raiser this year. In the past, we combined a Dog Walk-a-thon and a “Blessing of the Animals” event. I think there is a St. Francis of Assisi day in the Fall that we used for that. A nice idea, but not much of a money maker.
I am thinking something more ambitious - like a doggie event in the park with games, prizes, demonstrations…. Has anyone here ever organized or even participated in such an event? Could use ANY ideas. Please note that we are in a RURAL area so not a lot of dog organizations or anything to tap into. hey, if we get ideas for some good events, maybe we can adapt some for Camp Bedbugs!
Please blog or PM any ideas - Thanks, Ruth and Daisy Mae

Events that we have organized through dachshund events are like: Dachshund Days, WeinerFest & Bark in the Park. Each one was a little different. We did contests such as best kisser, howling with their owner, best costume, best trick, hot dog return (dog must fetch a hot dog at least 10 foot away and bring it back to their owner UNEATEN), who traveled the furthest to attend the event, longest ears, cutest pup, cutest adult, oldest doxie in attendance, longest tail, a mini race of 20 ft. track & most smartest. I hope that gives you some idea of what to have. Each person could enter any catagory for $5.00 or 4 events for $15. We went to local stores to find donated door prizes and prizes for winners. We even got sponsered by Hormel one year and they gave us free hot dogs, buns and chili to sell. Some places donated soda and chips. We started out by raising money for a local shelter when it turned into a no-kill shelter. When it was run by the county and they did a good job. The city police took over and money was being mismanaged so we decided to raise money for Breast Cancer. Either way, we had a ball doing this for years and a few of the events are still going on!! If this is going to be an annual event, you can have bandanas printed up to sell, marking each year the event took place. I have kept all Jacks winnings and are now in shadow frames. Good luck to you!! HAVE FUN!!
