Grrrrr!!! I need HELP!!!
So yesterday Nick & I were roughhousing during the superbowl…I was for the giants, he for the Patriots..So we’re playin around in the living room..all the dogs to the rescue! Mia tried to bite Nick. No she was not playing!! The only time she has really been aggressive is when she was pregnant. This is impossible now. No wwe will not roughhouse in front of her but we always have and she has never done anything like this. I think maybe she was trying to protect me, but this is unacceptable. Are there any classes on how to help this? Any advice? Anything!

This is very common behavior for the doxie. He is trying to protect you. They are a very, very protective breed. My 14 year old daughters little guy Buddy is the sweetest doxie in the world but if I am ever going to scold her for anything I have to make sure he is not around. I made the mistake of raising my voice to her while she was holding Buddy one day and he lundged at me and tried to bite me. Now when she thinks she might be in trouble she runs to get Buddy, then comes to me with him in her arms and grins at me. He is her big protector. lol

My mom’s dachshund was like this with her. They kind of turned it into a game with members of the family, but if it wasn’t someone he knew, he was very serious! My step dad would tease him by slowing inching a hand towards my mom and then wiggling her leg or something. Duke would start growling and then “biting” him once he was touching her. He also didn’t like anyone in the house to hug. My mom is a big hugger, so every time someone would hug her he would go crazy!
Tia - Funny about your 14 year old getting her protector!

Mia is just doing what comes instinctively; to protect her mom.
I guess Mia is most attached to you, Tosha, in the house.
To avoid this situation in the future I would not “create” the rough housing on the floor game when Mia is present.
I am sure all the hooping and hollering and squeals that goes along with rough housing raised Mia’s excitement level too.
To her, her mommy was being hurt and she needed to go afer whomever was going after her mom.
Mia is not able to distinguish the rough housing as being a game to real.

Thanks all!! I just didn’t know how to handle it when she did this. She’s so little she looked so funny tryin to be so tough. As soon as we were ALL calm she went over to Nick & love on him. I’m just glad other dachsies have the protective instincts as well. She is a mama’s girl!!
