I Am Living In A Tree House - Or My Nightmare Night!!!!
I sit here typing as banging is going on over my head as many men are repairing the roof on our house.
But I need to back up a bit and let you know what terrifying thing happend to cause all the banging.
Two nights ago we had a terrible wind storm, none like I can remember.
Baxter and I were tucked into bed sleeping, when around 11:30 I heard the most horrifying sound that to me, could only be a plane crashing next to our house!!
It wasn’t a plane, but a HUGE tree next to our house that came crashing down onto our house with such a roar that my heart stopped!! I did not know if a huge tree limb was going to come crashing down on Baxter and I!
I immediately felt the rush of cold air as I came out of my bedroom because a huge limb of the tree had smashed through one of my living room windows taking it out, frame and all!
I grabbed Baxter, who was my first concern, and ran downstairs (I live on the third floor of a huge brick house.)
My landlady and I were the only ones home and she came running out of her bedroom on the second floor mumbling something about sorry she woke me with her screaming and that she must of been having a bad dream.
I told her she did not have a bad dream but that a huge tree had fallen on the house!
She was so flustered she could not dial the police. I told her to dial 411 and ask for the fire department.
Within minutes we had three fire trucks and two police cars at our house.
Poor Baxter was shaking as I held him through all of this.
The huge tree had also taken out the whole top of the chimney, broke windows in her daugthers bedroom on the second floor and came right through the side glassed in porch roof like big daggers.
The fire department surveyed the rooms and were able to temporarily nail a tarp over my living room window and the other windows to keep the cold bitter winter air out as best they could.
They said we were very lucky the tree did not fall in the middle of the roof.
After the police and firemen left, my landlady put Baxter and I in one of the guest bedrooms on the second floor, but neither of us slept a wink all night.
The next morning we were able to see what the damage looked like, and it is extensive. The tree heavily damged the roof (that is why the roofers are pounding over my head as I type,) destroyed the chimney and did heavy damage on the eaves of the house on the side it came down on. It also took of bricks around my living room window where it came through.
The scariest part is that Baxter and I watch TV on a couch right next to that window and I would definitely not be here typing this blog to you if that tree came down a few hours earlier!!
Someone was watching over us for sure!
The tree people came with a huge crane yesterday to remove the tree and they also had to take down a beautiful old Maple tree in our front yard as it was dying and could be dangerous. My landlady cried when she saw that her Maple tree was gone as it’s leaves would turn the most amazing fire gold in the fall and it looked like a spot light was on it.
So, now we are under construction as they put our house back together.
I am just so thankful that no one was hurt as houses can be fixed.
We are both a bit traumatized still, but that will pass.
I know that I will not sleep soundly any windy night from now on.
I hope everyone on the blog stays safe through any storms that come their way as I would not wish my eventful night on anyone.
As I end this blog, pieces of ceiling paint are falling down on my laptop from all the pounding above.
We are supposed to have a snow/rain storm hit here tonight so I hope they do a good job!
Love to all,
Bette and Baxter

Thank you for your concerns.
As I look at the stump, which is all that is left of the tree that came down, it must be over 3 feet across!!
With the giant tree gone, Baxter and I now have an unobstructed view of our next door neighbors inground pool!

I’m so glad that you and Baxter made it through that terrible experience unharmed. Lucky you have such a good bedwarmer to keep you toasty until the roof and windows are fixed!

WOW! Very scary! Glad everybody is OK. Hope you guys are able to stay warm while they get things fixed! Hugs, Ruth and Daisy

Wow Bette! So glad you and Baxter are okay. Give him a hug from Cooper and me. Hopefully they’ll get your house fixed before the storm comes.

I’m so sorry to hear about your big scare and all the damage. Let’s just hope your neighbors believe in wearing swimsuits!

Bette I could still hear the concern in your voice when you called me yesterday. I have seen the huge maple in front of Bette’s house and that was the tree I immediately thought had crashed down. If THAT one had fallen it would have been a disaster too.
I hope you and Baxter are soon snug in your third floor aerie cozy and warm and watching television in safety.
Give Baxter a few extra hugs from me and make sure he gives you one yourself. (Baxter still does give hugs doesn’t he?)

How horrible Bette. My heart was racing as I read the blog. Thankfully everyone in the house was uninjured. WOW!!!
Hugs to you and Baxter (and your landlady) how frightening.
