Macho update
We did have a short time today when there was a chance Macho had been found. My neice got an email from a woman who has like an overflow rescue shelter, and she lives close to 2hrs from where my neice lives. This woman said she got a chihuahua puppy about a week ago, a male, not neutered, very scared, and she had been unable to get near him, so couldn’t really tell Shannon any specific markings. This woman thought he looked like Macho. Shannon called me on her way to this woman’s house, hoping it was Macho, but wasn’t getting her hopes up too high because the woman sent a pic, and even the the dog was all curled up, Shannon could somehow sense it wasn’t him, but she needed to make sure. She also had the woman call him by his name, and this dog didn’t respond, but still Shannon had to know. I was talking to Shannon as she pulled into the woman’s driveway, and she said she would send me a text message if it was Macho or not. I was in bed watching tv, and I prayed and prayed that Macho had been found, even found myself with tears in my eyes. I wanted so bad for Shannon to have her baby back, but the text message read “nope”. I haven’t talked with Shannon since, but I’m hoping she went to this woman’s house with a gut feeling it wasn’t Macho, but I’m sure still hoping and praying it was. I think what I’m going to do, one day this week I’m going to go help her look through a bunch of wood piles in this elderly woman’s yard. When Macho first got away, he was spotted by two people in this woman’s yard, and when Shannon asked the elderly woman if she had seen Macho, she said she had not but one of her wood piles had fallen down sometime that night. I know Shannon looked in some of the wood piles that night, but maybe was too afraid she would find him dead, so she concluded he wasn’t around that area. I am going to talk with her and see if we can search the wood piles, because if for some reason Macho did get into one of these piles and caused his death, my neice will at least know he’s gone, and hopefully begin the healing process, otherwise she will wonder the rest of her life if he’s safe, is he being treated good, you know all that stuff. I don’t want to find him in one of these piles, but something tells me we need to just look. I have also been thinking of surprising her with a new puppy. She has always bought her dogs from rescue shelters, but just once she wanted a dog from a breeder, and has wanted a chihuahua for the longest time. Macho came from someone who isn’t really a good breeder, but Shannon doesn’t know anything about breeders, so he was very timid, shy, scared of everyone and everything, and she thinks it’s because of the breeding. I really would love to surprise her with a chihuahua puppy, how will I know when she is ready for another one? I’ve only lost a cat, and haven’t had another since because I had Louie, and realized I wasn’t a huge cat lover afterall, just loved the one I had:) Does one have to have closure before getting another pet? Maybe someone can help me out. I’ll keep everyone informed on Macho, and please continue to pray that he is found. Thanks everyone, Bobbi

Oh, Bobbi, it is so gut wrenching to read your posts about Macho and how he has not been found yet.
I pray that some closure (hopefully a happy one) comes to your niece soon.
As for getting her a new puppy right now; all I can say is that when I was in 8th grade our Beagle followed me to the store (I did not know he had done this) and was hit and killed by a car.
My sister and I were so upset we cried all day at school the next day.
My mom knew we needed something to love and take the hurt away, so she went out and found two Beagle puppies for sale.
She could not take one and leave the other, so she got both of them!
Nothing will replace Macho in your niece’s heart, but maybe a new puppy will help her heal and feel the hurt a bit less.
A puppy to take care of and to love and get love from is always good for the heart.

We are so sorry to hear that Macho has not been found yet. I can’t even imagine to begin feel what your niece is going through. I know after going through what we did in losing Daisy and how hard that was I can’t even think how hard it would be to not know what happened to your baby. Your mind would never rest. I sure hope she finds closure.

What a trial for your poor niece. Seems to me that the folks that let him escape should pay for a new pup for her. Keep us informed. Hugs, Ruth and Daisy

I think you should get her a doxie puppy instead. That way it’s not like an actual REPLACEMENT and she won’t “compare” it to poor Macho. Does that make sense?

I think it is good if the next dog is a different color. Then you don’t compare as much. It is hard whether it is a day or years. They are always in your heart. Even 25 years later I get a catch in the throat for one I have lost. Dachsies are wonderful!! That’s why we are all here. Good luck to her.
Breeding makes a difference but nothing is perfect or predictable. Get a puppy that you love and connect with.
