Pyometra?~?~?~?~?~

So, to start off has anyone had any experience with Pyometra?? Turns out our Mia has it, which it usually occurs in older dogs. She is due to be altered next week but i was just wondering if this can happen during her heat?? Her dreaded “period” started last night and i am just not sure if she can be altered during this time or if since she has this disease they will still do it??????

I have not had any actual experience with pyometra. The actual word means pus in the uterus. I thought it was considered an emergency because of the infection that can be involved. I hope you have notified your Vet immediately of any changes in your dog. I believe this is one of the things that should encourage owners to get their dogs spayed.

At our office we usually Rx antibiotics for 10 days before surgery. This may not be the same procedure with your vet. While Pyometra is a pus filled uterus it is still the same procedure as a spay and may require some follow up antibiotics after the surgery. Keep the appointment. And yes it can happen during the heat cycle. Notice the more than usual “oily” discharge along with the blood. Most females keep the hind end very clean by licking, however if you spread the vulva you may see white, yellow,greenish pus and an odor which indicates she is not “dumping” all her fluids.
Now…..if she is running a temperature that is a sign that immediate medical attention is required.

Yes our vet knew of her pyometra. I guess it was in the early stages as to why we didn’t notice it sooner. Her surgery went just fine and no antibiotics were needed (thank God because Mia knows when you’re trying to sneak a pill into her food!!)But she is just fine and will be! We probably wuldn’t have noticed it but there was a distinct smell coming from that area and we were in desperate need of curing that and making sure she is great and healthy!! Thanks to all of you for your concern!!
