The rural Darke County Humane Society is celebrating their 55th year in existence with a FUND-RAISING AUCTION in May 2008. DCHS operates the only no kill shelter in our area. Operating costs are soaring, as is the need for space for homeless animals. DCHS also assists the community with a low cost shot clinic, a low cost neutering program, and Humane Officers who act on reports of neglect, abuse or injury to animals - both domestic and farm animals!

DCHS was operating "in the black" for several years after teaming up with the St. Mary's Catholic School to operate a Bingo Hall. Ohio then passed a smoking ban (which we fully support), however, most of the smoking Bingo players now just drive across the border to play in Indiana! Now both organizations are struggling.

Additionally, 2007 brought some unprecedented expenses with our intervention into 2 serious cases of neglect involving over 20 horses. Two were unable to recover from severe malnutrition, but the rest were saved! The Community rallied to help, but DCHS still ended up with over $8000 worth of debt related to their care. It would take a lot of "bake sales" to replace that kind of money!
