we’re gonna play frisbee!

I had always thought Champ was the stubborn one… I had attributed that to his previous owner/mistreatment before I rescued him. It took him weeks before he learned how to sit and lie down even with treats as bribe. I was used to Dee getting tricks within the first 5 minutes. I figured Champ was a slower learner, so we try to allot him as much patience as we could.

There’s a frisbee training clinic this coming Saturday and I really wanted to join one of my dogs. Dee’s too old for it, and Bailey’s too young, so that left Champ. I talked to the organizer, and while he was nice, he was also not that supportive about a doxie joining. He said that their requirement for dogs is that the dogs have a strong play and catch drive. He suggested that we just sit in and watch (instead of joining) so the limited slots won’t be “wasted”.

Well, Champ loves to play and he definitely has drive, but he hasn’t perfected the “come here” command, and I’ve never tried to let him catch. But I was miffed that the organizer thought that we might be a waste of space so I still registered us in. And yesterday, I went and taught Champ how to play fetch.

I am continually amazed at my dogs and their perception. I think Champ sensed that this is very important to me, so he learned how to fetch, come back and drop the toy on my feet in half an hour :)

I know the chances of us playing frisbee correctly is slim (fetching toys is still different from catching frisbees), and us even qualifying for the frisbee competition next month is even slimmer. We might look stupid next to all the other bigger and more agile dogs in the clinic. But …this is gonna be oh so cliche… my Champ is already a champ to me :)

Wish us luck for Saturday!!!

Good Luck with your CHAMP and may he show everyone else that he is a CHAMP!

My only concern about Frisbee is the jumping that I usually see involved with the game.

Otherwise - organized sports for dogs are fantastic ways to socialize and exercise them.

Not to rain on your parade, but I agree with Laura about the jumping up to catch the frisbee, then coming down not being good for a doxie’s back.

It is great that you are trying to find some activities for Champ to participate in, but I would just be very careful and maybe try to see if there are any doxie agility (like going through tunnels, etc) classes in your area you can get Champ involved in rather than frisbee - JMO

Thanks for all the replies! :)

Thanks also for the concern regarding jumping and his back. The jumping frisbee (that you probably had in mind) is actually an advanced level. There’s no way we can compete in that, hehe. There are categories that are simpler– like rolling a frisbee on the ground, and the dog has to catch it while it’s rolling, and other “low impact” frisbee maneuvers :) That’s what we’re trying to get into :)
