puppy neutering
Hey everyone.
Well Rusty is still MIA. We haven’t heard anything in a week and we have no idea where he has gone. If Rusty somehow turns up my boyfriend decided he would take him. On a happier note my friend told me about one of her friends who had a litter of little male wiener dog puppies. I am going to take a look at the last one left tomorrow night so hopefully it’s love at first sight! He is eight weeks old and got his first round of shots today and he also got neutered. I had a concern/question for the forum though. How long should you wait to get a puppy (especially a wiener dog) neutered? I’ve had people tell me the earlier the better. Others have said 6 months. And others were appalled to find out he got neutered today (on his 8th week old). I am going to call a vet tomorrow and ask them but I was just curious to hear what you all have heard/done or know about this. The more feedback the better!! THANKS!

Our beagle/basset was neutered at 8 weeks because he came from a shelter and that’s just how they did it, but I would normally wait until a year or more so the dog can fully mature. Early neutering can affect on bone density and length, which is especially important for dachshunds.

I’ve heard it is quite common for them to fix dogs as puppies now a days, especially shelters, I myself have always gone by the six month rule though.

Over here the very earliest they will neuter is at 9 months. This is because they wait until the growing plates of the bones close, so the pup can reach its true size. A & O are now old enough for the op…. and will have it soon.

Without going into detail I will just say that I don’t agree with neutering before sexual maturity for several reasons.
My vet will not even consider it until the age of 6 months.

My two boys were neutered at 6 months, which I like. Phoebe is different. I got her from a rescue who uses a vet that believes in spaying very early. The only requirement was that she was over 2 lbs. She was spayed at 5 weeks. I’m not sure if I would have done it that way if it were completely my choice, but well, it wasn’t my choice. I am just thankful she made it out of the anesthesia alright. I really like waiting until 6 months, but some people think differently. I don’t think your boy will have any problems, but just ask your vet.
