Dog bug??
Hi all
Have any of your dogs been sick lately? It has went through all 6 of our dogs now.Several people in the area are dealing with it.(as Carol told me) I guess its viral as I called the vets to see whats up.
Its really bad..they get the runs like water and throwing up.Some of them had a little blood in their stool.Vet said to try to keep them drinking and bland foods wich has worked well for us.We have just one left that is still kinda sick. All the others have recovered well.I was real nervous for the female that just had pups as she was the sickest of all.I have never seen a dog with Diarrhea like this.It made me think of parvo but I knew all our dogs were UPD on shots.
I was just wondering if anyone was dealing with the same bug.The Vet said it is quite a problem around here.
I have also heard there is a new strain of Parvo..anyone heard of this?
thanks
Mike

I think I jinxed myself by talking about the virus Mike. My husband has it now and he’s driving me crazy! High temp., cough, throwing up, etc. I insisted he go to the doctor because I was afraid it was the flu. (You only have 48 hours from the onset of symptoms to take the meds to lessen the severity and length of it.) But they said it’s just a very bad “bug” that’s going around. I’m sure hoping that it’s not something my dogs can get too.

I have not heard of this virus Mike.
I never knew dogs could catch a virus from a human.
Sorry to hear it hit your fur babies and I’m glad to hear they are on the mend and feeling better.

What I meant by alot of people dealing with it is with their dogs.I dont know of any people getting it or if it can be passed on to humans.Just thought I would clear up my mis wording..I’m good at that..lol

Sounds like the same thing Beau had a couple years ago all those symptoms plus a high temp. My vet said if he didn’t know Beau was UTD on shots he would have thought Parvo. So after a Sunday trip to the vet and a shot of antibiotic. By the next day he was doing much better it was kinda like a dog flu. He was one sick puppy though.

I told awhile back about my Ali having Hemorrhagic Gastroenteritis - in other words bloody diarrhea. She had bright red blood in her stool more like chocolate pudding) sorry, but I was so close to losing her. She actually had blood running from her. If I had been gone —- I woke up to a house full of icky all over. Had to leave it and run to the Vet. If your dog has bloody diarrhea go to your vet immediately. She spent 3 days 2 nights at Vet on IV fluids, antibiotics. If it is not treated very early they will die. They do not know what causes this. Just a warning. I was so scared because she is 14. If she hadn’t been healthy to begin with I would have lost her.
This is most common in Poodles, Schnauzers and Dachshunds !!

So far so good here…hope I didn’t just jinx us!

We don’t have it up here that I’ve heard of.
As for the parvo - when our puppy Rollo was going through his parvo episode the vets told us they thought he had a new strain. It showed up as a very weak positive on the parvo test and he would get better then get worse again to the point where we had to consider putting him down three times. He lost a ton of weight and still gets a very upset stomach if he eats the wrong thing.

We have a basset hound puppy that caught it here. he was down for a week and lost a ton of weight. The vet said it was viral too.

Spring is here and with spring the threat of parvo. There is a stronger strain of parvo that hit all of the US last year.
Mike if this was parvo, you would know it. You most likely would have lost some of your dogs. The major symptoms of parvo are of course raging diarrhea but the first thing you will notice and it is always there is a refusal to eat and depression. You can see the depression very easily. The dog will actually sit with his nose to the floor and slump over. Not wanting to walk.
It could be giardia or also viral. Make sure mom gets LOTS of fluids since she is nursing. It will be very easy for her to get dehydrated since her fluids are going to the production of milk. I would get her some pedialyte or gatorade.
I am sorry you are going through this. It is so worrisome. I know when River had parvo I nearly went nuts worrying about my other dogs.
Our new newfie has kennel cough and is being treated for it. I am hoping the others do not come down with it.
I don’t know of any viral illnesses going around here with bloody diarrhea. Good luck and keep us posted on how mom and babies are doing.
Also remember that when pups are born they have moms immunities and new babies rarely ever get sick.

lepto in some cases can cause bloody stools, but usually shows a very concentrated dark urine or perhaps even orange along with jaundice.
spring time is lepto time
