How old before….

My puppy Toby turns 9 months on the 15th and is getting a bit too “friendly” with my female Avi (not from the same litter!) so I was wondering, what´s the best age for me to find him a girlfriend? Also, after he becomes a daddy, or attempts to, will he calm down a bit? I love him to pieces and he´s so handsome, his puppies would be adorable (with the right mother). Thanks and enjoy the weekend!

IMO him breeding any female will only make him worse! The best way to calm him down a little would to be getting him fixed.
A male can breed at the age yours is now but I would really think hard about it.There is soooo much more than just the breeding its self.If you look under the breeding furum here you will see where this has been discussed to great length.
Breeding is a huge under taking and I just hope your ready for all that goes along with it.What ever you choice is I say study up and good luck!!

    sorry for the typos…lol

Breeding a male does not calm him down, on the contrary it does just the opposite and also increases his desire to mark EVERYTHING in his path. If you are not really serious about breeding and have not researched all involved, I would strongly advise against it.

If he lives indoors and is first and foremost your pet, it would be in his best interest and yours to have him neutered. In addition to the marking, an unneutered male being bred, may also become agressive to your other pets.

Breeding requires a lot of study. We tend to look at two beautiful dogs and imagine their puppies. You may get a surprise when you don’t know what they carry. You could have pups totally different from what you think you will get. It still amazes me that you could breed two red smooth and get black and tan pups.

My Vet said to me that you have to be prepared for the fact that you could lose the Mother and some or all of her pups. Not all females are guaranteed to have an uncomplicated pregnancy or delivery. One more thing - having him neutered will greatly diminish his chances of testicular cancer. In the female they can get breast cancer, and other female cancers if not spayed.
Lots to think about when that little fella’ starts humpin’ around. You would be surprised how far a bitch in heat can attract a male and he could slip out of the house. They get very determined to find that female.

Do you have homes ready for all the pups. Will you keep any that don’t sell? What will happen to them.

I hate being so negative but it is not for the faint of heart.
Enjoy your dogs. You will make the decision that is right for you and you dogs.

Unless you know what your doing I’d get him fixed. He’ll stop humping and be a calmer dog.

Wow, thanks you guys! This definately makes me think about getting him neutered. Can I do that already or should I wait for a certain age? This will also stop him from marking? Sorry for all the dumb questions, but I want to learn and do the best thing for my baby. Thanks for all the advice, espcially since I don´t know what I´m doing. And Tia, what´s up with little Gracie? Did she give birth yet? YAY, can´t wait to see pics!

I have had several males in my life time who have lived to a ripe old age, the most recent 16.5yrs and none of them had to be neutered and didn’t die of anything related to being intact.None of them got out to impregnate any local females either.

If you wish to neuter at least wait till the dog finishes growing, taking away the sex hormones interferes with the bone growth, the long bones depend on these hormones to tell them when to stop growing, getting this done too early may explain why there are so many long legged dachsies which are a short legged breed.

Being a breed prone to back problems I am worried too on the affect early neuter has on the spinal bone development.

Early neuter used to be advocated over here in the UK but for the past few years following research it was decided that waiting till maturity had been reached was a better option.

There are those irresponsible owners who will allow their dogs to roam the streets impregnating every fertile female in their path, these dogs should either be removed to a safer place or neutered to stop this happening when they get out.

Do some research on the web and make the right decision for your dog.

    Rhona
