a new addition soon
Dee, Champ and Bailey are going to have a new sibling soon! But this time, it’s not gonna be a puppy… they’re gonna have a hooman baby sibling! My hubby and I just found out I’m pregnant.
Any doxie/dog related adjustments other mommies had to make? I’m assuming I just have to be more careful in general around the dogs, and not trip all over them when my tummy gets big. In the meantime, I’m loving dog smells now, it’s crazy. They say pregnant women have cravings and aversions (both eating and smell) and I’m craving the smell of my dogs, even the ‘ew, wet dog’ smells. Hehehe.
My only worry at the moment are my extremely narrow minded in-laws. They’re not animal people and just last weekend they were saying that parents who have kids and keep dogs and cats are stupid. And they asked what we’re gonna do with the dogs after I give birth. They can’t seem to comprehend that I’m obviously keeping them!
Was it difficult for the dogs to adjust to the new addition? I’m nervous because Dee hates kids, but she seems to know something is up with me. I hope Champ and Bailey accept this quicker than i have

Congratulations. I’ve recently (well almost two years ago) gone through this. You know your dogs better than anyone else, so you know if htey have any kind of aggression problems. If none are evident then the best thing you can do for them is ease them into the idea so it isnt a huge shock. Get a baby doll, a diaper baby powder etc and let them adjust to you carrying it around and how it smells. If they jump on you while you are holding the “baby” correct them, once they catch on to this then move a step higher and start integrating baby sounds for them. Find a video of a baby crying and BLAST it. Let it startle them, but dont show them any emotion or anything, just remain calm like its perfectly normal. Once you feel more comfortable with it, take them to a park where there are kids and allow them to see soem babys, or if you have a friend who has a baby bring it over and let them sniff and teach them how to act around it etc. If your dogs are anything like mine, it will be MUCH harder to adjust the baby to the dogs once he/she is running around yanking tails and ears. I wish you the best of luck, and if you ever have questions about your pregnancy or anything I would be glad to help in any way I can.

Congratulations! I don’t have any advice, but I do think Summer’s advice was great about carrying a doll around. Heck, it may help you to adjust too!
Anyways, congratulations and we can’t wait to see pics of the baby!

My inlaws were the same way, thought I should get rid of my dog. AS. IF. Apparently in their world, kids don’t have pets. I had to tell off my father in law LOUDLY on said subject.
What my hubby and I did, we let our dog sniff all of the baby “stuff” well in advance of the birth–baby products, baby toys, baby furniture, baby clothes–all of it. And we read somewhere that you should be sure to pay attention to the dog with praise/love/peting while the baby is in the room…otherwise, the dog would start thinking, “Darn, if I could get rid of that baby, I’d get some attention again!”
Also, we didn’t hide the baby away from the dog. We introduced them as soon as we brought her home from the hospital, or maybe the very next morning. And we let our dog sniff the baby directly, right away, without scolding or pushing him away. That way he could satisfy his curiosity.
Now, on the other side of things, we also made sure to be very clear about the baby “outranking” the dog. I don’t remember how, though. (My “baby” is now 15.)
You only need to get through the early months. Once the baby starts eating (and throwing cheerios and other yummy prizes onto the floor) your dog will view the baby as an excellent source of snacks and will do anything to protect said source of bonus food!

Congrats! I don’t have much advise because I have never been pregnant and had dogs to have to get use to the baby. I just hope in time you will share pictures when you can.
