7 week old mini dachsunds

We just purchased two mini’s. The breeder gave them 4 wormings and their first shot. We took them home and within three days we were at the vet getting them treated for worms! The worms were pretty bad. One was severely dehydrated and the other would experience a swollen belly. I have a call into the breeder to discuss this situation with her. I paid a good price for the dogs (AKC) and the vet bill was $300. Should I ask the breeder for reimbursement of some of the vet bill? I’ve contacted the AKC and the Consumer Protection Agency. I want to be fair. Any suggestions? thanks,t

I can’t weigh in on the wormings, but it does sound like your breeder did not deworm your puppies thoroughly since they had such a bad case of them shortly after you brought them home.

But part of the problem is that the breeder should not have let them go at 7 weeks.

Puppies, and Dachshunds puppies in particular should not be taken from their mom until they are 8-9 weeks of age.
    Reputable breeders know this.

At least you took them to the vet so they could be treated as dehydration in a puppy can be very dangerous.

    Good luck with your babies.

All breeders should take their pups in for a fecal exam (all respectable breeders do) before they ever leave their home.

    Who was the breeder?

  4. Comment by dazeymaye002:

This is great information. I thought perhaps 7 weeks was too early but they were doing fine. We’ve been working with the same vet for 10 years. He was very helpful. For the sake of confidentiality, I don’t want to name the breeder. I am waiting for her return call and I’d like to give her a chance to respond. I know I have options for filing a complaint, but I’m hoping we can resolve this issue.

I agree they should have had a fecal exam before being sent out. Since there are different kinds of worms, I wonder if they did not treat for the right one(s). Years ago I got a pup from some bad people. They said he had been wormed - well, they gave him HORSE wormer - he nearly died from toxicity of the horse worm medicine AND from SEVERE worms as that medicine did not kill the kind of worms he had. He is almost 15 now, so I’ll bet your pups will be OK!
Good luck - Ruth and Daisy Mae

As Ruth said, maybe they didn’t use the right type of wormer, when I got Abbey she had been wormed, but she had tapeworms so the wormer they gave her didn’t work. Also, down here in “hicktown Alabama” we had always been told that you could give puppies away at 6-7 wks of age(as I got Abbey at 6 wks)….honestly it took me until last year to realize different!I do think that her breeders are super nice people and they have very healthy dogs and nice vet references and we still stay in contact, and I have no regrets from buying from them,I just hope that from now on they realize they should keep the puppies a little longer insteand of saleing them at 6 weeks!Anyway,I’m sure you babies will be fine!!Let us know!

Breeders are notorious for worming their own pups and not doing it properly or not worming them at all. They do this to save money.

All reputable breeders take their babies to the vet, use the same quality wormer and shots and so on.

I would definitely complain to the breeder. If she did her job correctly, you and the puppies would not have this problem.

I am a breeder and I would NEVER send a puppy with worms to a new home. It is totally irresponsible. Don’t cut her any slack. She does not deserve any.

  8. Comment by Kayla:

    Tia,
I think you make alot of sense and I’m super glad that there are responsible breeders out there like you!As I said I have no regrets in buying Abbey, but I do wish I had known more truth about stuff back then, like the wormings and the age and stuff like that. But now I do know,so maybe I can inform more people down here of stuff like that.

  9. Comment by Tia:

I personally do not understand the hesitance to name the breeder. If you were buying a car and had a problem with it, you would not have a problem naming the salesman who sold it to you.

I think that if more people started naming these breeders who do not put care into their puppies, things might start to change.

There is no excuse for a puppy to have worms or any other illness for that matter.

It is about money and cutting corners for them.

All puppies should be wormed but just as importantly, all puppies should go to the vet and get a well puppy check and a fecal exam BEFORE going to their new homes. High volume breeders for profit do not do this.

If you pay for a product, whether it is breathing or not, you deserve to get what you pay for…A happy, healthy puppy.

I would ask this breeder to pay your vet bill. If she is concerned about the babies, she will not have a problem with it.

Yep… sorry but I am very opinionated on this subject. It really hits home for me.

  10. Comment by PorterBella:

Not all breeders take their pups to the vet to be wormed. The breeder that I got Porter from did her own shots and worming. He was vet checked and nuetered before he came to me.
I of course took him in 2 days later to be checked by my vet. In looking at the breeders record on Porter and seeing the sticker the breeder used he was surprised at the calibur of wormer used on Porter. Sayed it was one of the best out there.
I personally see nothing wrong with a breeder giving their own shots and wormer as long as they are informed and above board. I have friends who used to show and breed mastiffs. They did all their own shots and worming based on their vets protocal. It saved them time and alot of money. And these kids were their babies!!! All 5 of them were in the house and so were any offspring. Imagine that. They are big and beautiful animals. Wow.
I hope you find recourse with your breeder. I would upright ask for the vet bills to be paid as to get pups that early and have something be so wrong so quickly. I hope that she had a health guarentee as well.
Take care and good luck I hope all ends well for you and your babes.

  11. Comment by dazeymaye002:

The breeder paid my vet bill and offered a free week of boarding. Now of course, I’m concerned that if I need the boarding what insurance can she give me that my dogs won’t get worms again. Well, I took them to the vet and he gave them two doses of dewormer. The boys, Blackie and Sam are doing GREAT! Now, I have another concern, Blackie has a protruding sternum. The vet said it is common in doxeys. We have to get an xray. The vet says it’s congenital. I am going to bring this up to the breeder this week. When we got the pups, we didn’t notice it. It wasnt’ until they started to fill out. Anyone have comments on the sternum isssue? Anyone ever experienced it with their dogs?
