Chip is throwing up foam??
It’s me again with yet another problem
Our newest member Chip (now 13 weeks old) has been doing great-but the last couple of days he has started throwing up off and on. He is still playing and eating fine, and his poop and pee is all normal. He has also been eating more grass than usual and will then gag till he throws up white foam and grass. He had a vet visit just over a week ago and everything was fine then. He is still as playful and comical as he always has been but I am worried about the throwing up foam part. I thought it may be because of the heat-we live in mississippi and its been really hot the last few days and he loves to go outside to play. But with all his fluff (he is longhaired) he gets really hot really fast and when he finally gets cooled back off is when he seems to get sick. But the eating the grass part is just when I take him out to potty then he will gag. He has only threw up about 6 times in 2 1/2 days (half the time his food, the other times foam). Have any of yalls puppies ever done this? Do I need to call the vet? His eyes, gums, skin, nose and mouth all show no signs of sickness or dehydration. I am just really worried!

Sometimes puppies throw up foam because their tummies are empty.
Are you feeding him enough and is he going to bed hungry? That will sometimes trigger them to throw up if they go to bed with an empty tummy.
I would really try to curtail the outside activity in this heat wave, especially if he is getting sick when he tries to cool down after being outside.
Make sure there is always a cool bowl of clean water for him to drink outside and cool his body off with wet towels when he comes in from the heat.
I would also watch him outside and tell him no if he tries to eat the grass as you never know what is in the grass or on it that could harm him as puppies have a very delicate digestive system.
Good luck with your little one!

Staci, the grass is giving him a sour stomach, and Baxter’s Mom is right too-he’s probably eating the grass because his tummy is empty and he needs to eat. Remember when they are little like that, you can feed them small meals 3-4 times a day.
For the sour stomach, I’ve always had good luck with a little bit of cottage cheese. It seems to neutralize the acid in their tummy and make them feel better.

Our dogs have thrown up white foam before after they have eaten too fast. And since Chip has been throwing up food too sometimes I’m thinking that he is just eating too fast. We have a few that inhale there food they eat that fast. So when they are done they gag a bit and food or white foam comes out. Maybe he is eating the grass too fast or his food.
If he keeps on doing it though I would contact your vet.

Now that you said that, he doesn’t really eat that much before bedtime and he would throw up the foam in the mornings on his first trip outside. I let him and my other doxie free feed because neither one of them really eat much at a time (just a few bites then come back later). So today to make sure he was eating and drinking enough I was feeding him in his crate and he hasn’t threw up since this morning when I wrote this. So maybe that is all it was! And I always make sure they have plenty of clean water while outside. I really limited his outside time today to only potty breaks (with no snack of grass) and as I said he seems to be fine now! Thank You so much for your comment-it made me feel alot better!! I will post again tomorrow and let you know if he is still doing ok by then! Stacy

You are very welcome, and I hope that now that he is eating more, you won’t see him throwing up anymore.
I do not recommend free feeding for a puppy as you need to know how much food they have eaten and to make sure they are getting the daily requirement for their age and weight.
Feeding Chip in his crate or in a gated off area from your other doxie will guarantee that he is getting all his food and it is not being eaten by his sibling, leaving him with not enough in his tummy.

Thank you for the advice on not free feeding a puppy-I never thought anything of it before but we had only had one dog at a time until now. He seems to be doing really great, and he is eating more this afternoon than he has in the last few days. I really appreciate any and all advice-its like with kids-you can never get enough

I agree the vomiting is usually when they have eaten early the night before and then haven’t eaten first thing in the morning, my 3 get a dentastix or other dental cleaning treat at bedtime so that helps.
I free feed my dachsies because they don’t all want to eat at the same time of the day, Chase for instance will eat after her last trip out for a wee, none of them eat before mid morning.
I hope the pup settles down now that you know the possible cause.
