The nightmare nobody wants to come home too..
Well, last night I had my first and LAST crisis with Tootsie. We have been trying to leave her our of her crate while we run to the store for 45 min to an hour just so she gets use to being home by herself, and not locked in the crate all the time. Well yesterday my boyfriend and I went to a Father’s Day bbq for 3-4 hours and prior to this, Tootsie had been doing REALLY well with being home by herself, being a good girl. Well yesterday I had the biggest scare of my life. Upon my arrival back home, I found that Tootsie had got into a tube of Cortisone 10 ointment and nearly ate half the tube. I couldn’t believe it. More so I couldn’t believe that I had left such a dangerous item out for her to get too. I immediately started reading the label on the back to see if it was poisonous; it sure enough was. I called the emergency vet who then told me to call the Poison Control Center and report what she had just ingested(or at least in the last 3 hours), Poison control center had be on HOLD for 16 minutes (I timed this because 16 minutes was an eternity while knowing my baby was possibly poisoned) so I was not only hysterical at this point, I was pissed off to know that had this been a REALLY time sensitive emergency, my pet could of died by then. So I hung up, called back the ER vet and told them I am having no luck with the PCC and that I needed help ASAP because I don’t know how serious this is or how long she had until she could die!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! They told me to bring her in ASAP because steroids could effect a dog badly. I jumped in the car and made it there in 14 min or so (speeding like a mad woman) I couldn’t stop crying because all I could think was “omg my baby could die and it’s all my fault for being careless” Tootsie, the entire time, seemed to be perfectly fine. She wasn’t acting “weird” or showing any symptoms but that still didn’t make me feel any better… I knew what she had gotten into and I was WORRIED. The nurse was trying to calm me down by telling me she thinks she SHOULD be ok but wanted to check her vital signs and scooped her from my arms into the back. That 15 minutes was HELL!!!!! Finally the toxicologist came out, brought us in the back room, to tell us Tootsie would be fine, just to keep an eye on her and make sure she wasn’t acting weird or vomiting. They said to get some PEPCID AC from the local drug store and give her 1/4 tablet once a day for 7 days. That would help her upset belly/diarrhea which we were told to expect in the coming days. I have NEVER been so relieved to hear such news. The thought of my Tootsie leaving me forever was the scariest and most unbelievably painful thing I ever experienced…. I hope nobody has to feel that… So just a heads up to all of you out there that thinks they have “Put everything away”………always do a DOUBLE triple check because I thought leaving the Cortisone 10 cream up on the computer desk would be out of reach for my doxie, and it surely was NOT! She jumped up on the couch, and made her way to the computer desk where she got into the ointment. Please, please please double check when you leave your house to make sure EVERYTHING is away and there is nothing your dog can get into. It will save you a lot of tears, anxiety and fear………trust me!!!!! Tootsie seems to be doing fine today, she did have some diarrhea this morning, but the vet said that we should expect that…. I will keep everyone updated but so far, so good…
THANK YOU LORD FOR SAVING MY PUPPY….I couldn’t thank you MORE!

How scared you must of been. I am also very thankful Tootsie is going to be alright. It amazes me the places they can get to if they want. Give her hugs from us and we hope her belly calms down quickly.

Tina - What a fright! Don’t beat yourself too much - it is hard to totally dog proof anyplace! Before I got Shed, she ate a partial bottle of anti-depressants (VERY dangerous). Ay my house she ate most of a plastic jar with Vaseline in it. I’ll bet most folks have a story or two. Jusy glad he’s OK!

Wow! I read the headline of the blog and was scared to death!!!
Thanks for sharing your scary story as a reminder to all of us about being extra careful about leaving stuff around.
We’ll keep little Tootsie in our thoughts for the next few days and pray that she has nothing more than a tummy ache and some runny poo!

I’m sooooo glad to hear Tootsie is doing OK, and you too. We’ll still say some prayers tho. I don’t know why the emergency vet just can’t help you. When my Anna got into the Easter chcolate, they had me call the poison line, too. Something needs to be fixed in this help line.

Oh Tina! I am so sorry for your terrible scare, but, so happy that everything is going to be okay. Please do not blame yourself. Little doxies just love being nosey and getting into everything they can find. Bet that did not taste too good!
Give Tootsie a big hug from us and we will certainly keep y’all in our puppy prayers!
