Gestation is 63 days. You may not begin to see signs in her shape for a month after the tie, but you will see swelling of her nipples in about 3 weeks and here behavior will start changing sooner. NOW is the time to start feeding her puppy food in place of her adult food. It has more nutrients in it and she should eat it until the puppies are whelped and have stopped nipple feeding. It would not hurt a bit to slip a raw egg in her food after the first couple of weeks, either! Good luck!

Was this an intentional breeding? Dont take this wrong, but if it was intentional didnt you do some homework before hand? Whelping isnt for the faint of heart either. Are you prepared financially for a c-section in the middle of the night? And for the vet care of a litter of pups? These along with many other questions you need to ask yourself BEFORE you breed. I am not saying this in a nasty way, I just hope you do alot of reading and ask ALOT of questions before those pups get here. Feel free to PM me or call me. I am in the Blog book.
Rosie started poppin out on the sides at about three weeks, but she is a tiny girl, and very slim. her little tooty stayed swollen longer as well, as did her nips. Good Luck!!

Oh my, Melissa, was this “union” planned? Please heed the above warning from Kendra. I don’t mean to be blunt, but if this is not intentional, it is not too late for your Vet to help. Please call your Vet’s office to tell them what has happened. Whelping pups can be a very expensive situation and also dangerous for your bitch if you are not prepared if things go wrong.

  4. Comment by DoxiePets:

By all means call your vet. If the breeding was intentional or not, pre-natal care is very important. I almost lost my lovely Kate her last breeding and I just found out that Kira’s grandmother died this year in childbirth. Not all of that can be prevented, of course, but your vet should be in the loop every step of the way!

    Good luck!

I agree that homework should have been done before any mating took place, to admit not knowing the basics doesn’t bode well for the future whelping etc.
