Hey everyone my dachshunds are having teeth problems and the vet says if we don’t start brushing the oldests (Max) teeth it can get into his bloodstream and cause some serious problems. I think they just don’t like the toothpaste. Anyone have any flavor suggestions for me? We have the finger toothbrush. And I was also wondering if, should have a different toothbrush for each of them?

I use liver toothpaste. Works pretty good. They do try to eat most of it though. Haha. You should have different brushes - bacteria is spread that way through bleeding gums etc. Better safe than sorry! Hope this helps!

I use a chicken paste that I get at the Vet. I also get a small toothbrush there too. I had tried some from Petsmart and the head was just too big for her mouth. The one I use is about 3/8 of an inch all around. I put her in the bathtub and back where her lips meet I pull that straight out and slide the brush back in that space. You can hear whether you are getting her teeth or not. Sounds like when you brush your teeth. For the front teeth just push up her upper lip under her nose and brush uo and down. The toothpaste should have an enzymatic action so even if you don’t get every surface brushed the paste will help. Look to see if there is blood on the brush, if so, be gentle but keep on brushing and talk to your Vet. Your pup may need to be on antibiotics.
Dogs like people can get serious serious kidney and heart disease from bad teeth and gums. I used to work in Open Heart Recovery and many of our Valve replacement patients had to have their rotten teeth pulled and the infection cleared up before they would do heart surgery on them.
Because of the work I do I tend to get a little wordy on this stuff. I don’t mean to offend. I just think of too much to say. Hope this helps. If the finger brush works for you by all means do what works.
Ali has had to have a couple teeth pulled years ago. I learned my lesson then. It will save you money and Vet bills. I have been reading about these places that do NO anesthesia teeth cleaning. I am hoping to learn more about that as Ali is 14 now and not a good anesthesia risk. Have you heard anything about this?

    Oops
Absolutely a different brush for each. A new brush when it starts to look worn and flat. If one dog has a mouth infection you don’t want to spread anything between them.
