Longhaired with funny looking hair?!
Hi again! Chip has come a long way on his housetraining and is finally starting to understand the difference in sunbathing time and potty time! He has also realized that he is sharing “his” yard with a family of very noisy squirrels that he doesn’t care for much! He made that very clear the last two days with alot of barking, scratching his hind legs, and causing all the hair on the back of his neck down to his tail stand up! It looks sooo funny! He does it every time something new shows up in the yard or if he hears something that he’s not sure about. The strangest thing is the part that is sticking straight up on end is a patch of longer, stiffer hair that runs in a stripe down his back. The rest of his hair is so soft and silky except for that funny patch down his back. I had heard that long haired weenies don’t get their full coat in until somewhere b/w a year and 3 years old. I wondered if that was true? See, both of his parents were shorthaired and he was the only longhaired pup they had ever had. So I wondered if his hair will stay like it is, half soft half stiffer, or if as he got older it would all end up the same? I am hoping all of his hair will turn out as soft and silky as all the rest of him is and not stiff like that one patch-but thought maybe yall would have a better idea of how that usually goes as they get older. Also, is there anything that is really good to condition him with? I also need a good conditioner for Sweetie, my shorthaired, she has the really short, stiffer hair that most black and tans I know have.
Hope everyone here is having a great morning-look forward to hearing from yall!

Without seeing a picture, I’m not really sure how his coat will turn out, but many smooth doxies have a strip down their back of slightly longer stiff fur. We love Fur Butter conditioner for both coat types. (I think the website is Happy Tails).

I will try to post some pics later tonite-all my pics are too large to put on here without shrinking them and I will have to wait on my hubby to show me how to do that. I am not that great at computers

The hair on a longhaired dachsie varies in different parts of the body, the puppy hair falls out on the body and coarser hair grows in gradually.
The longhair on the outer aspect of the ear tends to be finer and like puppy fur,the rest of the ear hair is the same as the rest of the body.
As your dog came from 2 smooth haired parents then the coat may not grow and develop to the same extent as a long from a purely long mating, it can take some longs up to 3 years to get their full coat it depends on the line. Your dachsie may get enough long hair to say it isn’t a smooth and stay that way, only time will tell, if you look at the pedigree and see how many long descendants there are, the more there are the better chance there is of getting a full long coat eventually.
The stiff hair is the dogs hackles which stand up when they are scared or worried about something new to them, it goes down once the problem has gone or they get used to the situation. I find as they mature the hackles go up less and less, they will stand their ground and the tail will be held higher than the normal level they carry it at.
If you put this into the forums and add some pics we will all be able to see how the coat is progressing so far.

Ha! We are mature and our hackles go up a lot, specially when we bark at bigger dogs.
