What should I do

My son’s friend came over earlier today and had a little what looks to be a jack russell terrier mix follow him here. She has remained on my porch all afternoon. She looks clean and cared for although she is not spayed. I wish I could keep her until I can find who she belongs to but I can’t. I asked my son’s friend if he knew who she belongs to and he does not. I gave her some water and food, she is now scratching at my front door to come inside. This really breaks my heart, but I already have 3 dogs and I can’t take another dog. Should I take her to the shelter???? Or should I continue to feed her and hope her owner will look for her and at least give it a day??? We live in a pretty big sub division. Any advise would be very helpful.

    Poor thing.

I could never leave a dog out at night, so I suggest you at least take her in for the night and let her get some sleep in a safe place, otherwise she may go off and get hurt or hit by a car.

Then contact your local shelter in the morning to see if anyone is missing a dog and see what they say.

Maybe one of the local vets knows her too if her owners have given her vet care.

Please let us know how things turn out.

That’s what I did. Gave the dog some water and a bit of food. It was daytime and I kept him in the backyard. I called the animal control to see if anyone had reported a lose in my neighborhood. I was in luck, one block over a guy had made a report and I got his number. It was a happy reunion. Give it a day at least.

What a happy ending. Glad you found it’s owner. But I’m confused, what do you mean by, “Give it a day at least.” I don’t understand.

When I said give it a day, I meant wait until tomorrow to see if her owner comes looking for her. Maybe wait until tomorrow afternoon. I just went outside and checked on her and she is still on the porch. I think I’ll take her to the shelter in the morning. I would hate for her to get hit. I’ll keep you all posted.

You might take her to the vet and see if she is microchiped. Just a thought.

I’m going to post signs in the neighborhood. The shelter is closed on Sunday so I’ll call them tomorrow and see if anyone has reported a lost dog. I’ll try and find her owner before I take her to the shelter. I’m also going to call my vet tomorrow and see about getting her checked for a microchip. The kids and I our on our way to post signs. Hopefully we will find her owner.
