My dachsie does the neck hold too!!! Does anyone know why they do it? I asked the question at allexperts dot com, and the dog-behavorist had never even heard of it before. Here's the question I'd asked, followed by her response:

Question
I have a 2-year-old red, smooth, standard male dachshund. Frequently, when I lie on the couch, he places his neck on my neck as if to attempt to hold me down. What does this act signify? Is he playing, or trying to protect or pin me down, or what? And why? (Actually, it's really hard to get up when he does this. LOL)

Answer
Dear Chris,

I honestly have no idea why he does this, and I haven't heard of this behavior before either. From the "LOL" in your message it seems that he is not getting aggressive when you remove him from this position, so it seems harmless enough. If however he gets growly or worse, snappy when you remove him, just stop letting him do it from now on. My guess is that he just likes the contact and it's his individual way of bonding with you. But I could be wrong so keep an eye on his reaction when you move him.

Good luck and thanks for writing.

OMG, I came online specifically to look this up! Little Young Count Pork Chopula (Percy Porkchop, for short) does this to me all the time when I'm lying on the couch! He holds down my neck with his neck. Does anyone know why Dachsies do that?

Jaeger is the champ at this. I am not sure who trained him but he could win awards at it. He manages it when I am laying down or even when I am sitting up. It is truly amazing....

Smokey does that, too. Usually he gets on my chest, and sometimes places a paw in a place that really hurts. I'm sure all you gals have had that experience, too.

I don't really get the neck hold... but Maddie is very good at pinning you down with one paw on each shoulder, she then proceeds to lay on you, and attack you with kisses.

This happens to me too but usually they stand on my chest. Between the laughing and the gasping for breath there is no way out!
