Smooth haired Doxie

I really want a smooth haired Dachshund puppy. When they are puppies its hard to really tell the difference between a short haired and smooth dog. Can anyone give me a few pointers? Most breeders are honest but there are those few that might just tell me what I want to hear to make a sell, so I would really like to educate myself a little bit more before actually buying a pup.

A short haired dachshund is a smooth.

I actually meant to say long haired. I noticed that right after I submitted the question….but when they are babies they all look “smooth” to me.

Hi, In most cases if both Mom and Dad are Long Hair then almost always the puppies will also be Long Hair. Also, at about 3 weeks in most cases the breeder should be able to tell if the puppies are Long Hair or smooth hair. I am a breeder. I hope this has helped. DoxieloverJoan

You can tell long from smooth at 2 weeks of age. Just look for a puppy over the age of two to three weeks when you start looking. The difference is very noticeable at that time.
