Pink-ish colored patches of dry looking skin-what is it?

Hi all,

Luigi has 3 small patches of skin (one of the top of his left front arm, and 2 smaller patches on each side of his face) that to me look like a patch of pink, dry, itchy skin…. I have noticed an increase in the amount of scratching he’s done lately but I thought because of the change of weather it was just because of dry skin (I know my skin has been super dry as well) so anyways-I showed it to my boyfriend and he also said hmm thats odd..maybe its just dry skin… So anyways-of coarse I need to know FOR SURE and made an appointment to see the vet after work today… I’m hoping its nothing… Could it be anything serious?? My dogs only go out in the backyard to potty, its fenced in, theres no other animals out there, they are indoors most of the day so I can’t imagine something bit them? Anybody have any suggestions?? I googled it last night and of coarse google pulled up “mange” but I HIGHLY doubt my dog has mange-where could he of gotten it???? He is in the house most of the day… And it’s not a raw, bloody looking patch of skin…it’s moreless pink and dry looking… Anyhoo-just figured I’d see if anyone ever had this issue and if so-what is it, what can I do for it? Also-he doesn’t have fleas… I checked him from head to toe and there isn’t a sign off any flea or bug…..

Needless to say, Tootsie is just fine-no itchy pink skin :o ) I’ll keep everyone posted after I get back from the Vet tonight..but in the meantime if anyone has a simliar issue write about it!!

    Tina,
From what I understand the mites that cause mange are on all dogs, if their immune system is compromised the mites can get a hold and cause mange. Mica had it when she was a puppy, probably from fighting ear mites and and ear infection and worms when we got her. She had small bald and thinning patches here and there, they were not red or raw. Your vet will do a scraping if he suspects it and will decide on a treatment.
Bald patches don’t always mean mange, it could also be an allergy of some sort.

ringworm (a fungus) can cause red/grey itchy round spots with hair loss. Watch to see if other spots crop up. In the mean time apply a soothing cortisone cream with aloe. If no change is noted in couple of days perhaps a visit to the vet. Wash your hand well after handling the affected area as ringworm is contagious.
